A few moments ago I posted information about Windows Vista SP1 and it being released to manufacturing. I just received the press release that Windows Server 2008 has, after approximately 3 years and 5000 peoples input been released to manufacturing with an expected launch date of 27 February 2008. - Customers and companies who participated in the SP1 beta program received SP1 last friday.
- Volume licensing customers can expect the English SP1 at the end of this week, with other languages following soon after.
- Later this month SP1 will be available to MSN and TechNet Plus subscribers.
Apparantly performance tests have been ongoing for the past 2 years and Microsoft have noticed significant performance benefits against Windows Server 2003, particularly with IIS7 and SMB2! To read more about this see the press release at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2008/feb08/02-04WS2008.mspx or read the Windows Server division blog at http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/ I'm looking forward to testing this SP out at the end of this week.

The long awaited Service pack 1 for Windows Vista was released to manufacturing today and Mike Nash of the Windows Product Management group over at Microsoft indicated some more firm arrival dates of this service pack. Here is the information from his blog post:
In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so. In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience. The remaining languages will RTM in April. For his blog post please go to http://www.windowsvistablog.com

Today I ran a full disk space scan on my Vista workstation and noticed that there was a 2GB file called hiberfile.sys. In Windows XP this was easy to get rid of, merely disable hibernation but try find that option in Vista! In order to do this you need to do the following: 1. Run cmd as administrator 2. type powercfg -h off and press Enter Now you are done. Simple command but a pain to find.

VMware acquires Thinstall |

VMware announced today that they have acquired Thinstall. This is great news for VMware because it means they will be stepping into the application delivery market! Great news for the community because it means that there is now another Virtualization/Application delivery vendor we can go to instead of Citrix. Jay Tomlin, a member of the SBC/Virtualization community even believes this is good news for Citrix. He explains that this will bring what Citrix has been doing for the past couple of years into the spotlight. Thinstall in short, virtualizes an application by packaging its executables, dlls, etc into a single package which you can launch. By packaging the whole lot into this package you can merely launch the application and not need to worry about the application working alongside other applications. Each application is completely independant of another. Lets wait and see what this acquisition will do for us! Below is a copy of the announcement.

Microsoft.com, quite possibly the second busiest web site a Windows Enginneer will have in his favorites is in the process of being upgraded from Windows Server 2003 up to Windows Server 2008. In fact there is only a single 2003 server still in operation in this farm. The Windows Server team have put together a short movie which tells its story... You can watch the movie clip here http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0801/31869/WS08_LoneServer_LongVersion.asx
