Public Folders "disappeared". How To Fix - 2006/05/10 11:58 In Exchange, someone can change the permissions of the Public Folders. If this person gives "Everyone" user a DENY permission, even as administrator you cannot undo the change. I had to solve just such a problem due to a mistake I made. (I thought i was editting the Anonymous Logon, but I wasn't I needed more coffee )

Now this is what happened: At first it didn't change a thing, but after around 10 to 15 minutes, all of a sudden the public folders disappeared.
I've spend a full working day trying to find ways to fix the permissions. However, all the things I found on the net either didn't work, or gave an error.

The cause of the "didn't work" proved to be simply because all the fixes were designed to give the Administrator user "full control" and Ownership. However, since there's a DENY rule on the Everyone group, and DENY take priority over ALLOW, you still couldn't do anything with the folder, not even see it. (I figured that one out when I was at home.)

Now to fix this problem, i began thinking in the direction of the Everyone User. I figured that in order to fix the problem, the DENY rule must be removed. The only method that actually was capable of editting the permissions list is the following (Came across it during my research):

- In Windows Support Tools, open LDP

- In Connect, don't fill anything out, just click Connect

- Then select BIND, yet again leaving all the field blank

- Then click Browse and type the DN of your Company's Configuration (eg.: CN=CONFIGURATION,DC=Company,DC=com )

- In this tree, browse to
> "CN=Services..."
> "CN=Microsoft Exchange..."
> "CN=Company Name..."
> "CN=Administrative Groups..."
> "CN=Your Administrative Group..."
> "CN=Folder Hierachies..."

- Here you'll find the Public Folder you couldn't see in Exchange anymore.

- Copy the DN and open the Command Prompt in Windows Support Tools

- Type "dsacls 'paste the DN' /R Everyone" and press Enter

- Then type "dsacls 'paste the DN' /G Everyone:GARC" and press Enter

- Reopen Exchange System Manager and you have your Public Folder back, problem solved! Hope this experience is helpfull for others
