How to Install VMware Server on Ubuntu 7.10 Print E-mail
Written by Richard Thompson, Friday, 26 October 2007

Ubuntu 7.10 is still fairly new and there are a lot of people out there wondering how they would go about installing VMware server on this operating system.

This guide will show you how to do it:

Before you start download all the files you will need:

- VMware Server from www.vmware.com
- VMware 1.1.3 patch from http://www.thompson.co.za/vmware-any-any-update113.tar.tar
- xinetd from http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/net/xinetd

In order to simplify things install xinetd,  if you downloaded this from the URL above you can simply double click the file and it will install for you.

Now open a terminal window on your Ubuntu server and get ready to perform the installation.
1.) Start by installing the build essentials, this is done by typing sudo aptitude install build-essential
2.) Now extract the VMware server  and the patch to your machine tar –zxvf VM* and tar –zxvf vmware-any-any-update113.tar.tar
3.) From within the extracted folder type the following sudo ./vmware-install.pl
4.) Select the default option for the first 15 questions then when you the following question answer NO

Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

5.) This will abort the installation. Now change directory to the vmware-any* directory and type sudo ./runme.pl
6.) Select all the default options until you reach the vmmom module question above, this time answer YES
7.) Continue answering the questions with the default options throughout. You will be asked to enter your license number, you can get this from the VMware website.  Following this installation is complete and your virtual server is ready to go!

Troubleshooting tips:
-  If you encounter an error where your Vmware Server Console just closes without any error try type the following command sudo rm /etc/vmware/not_configured.
- If you come to the end of the installation and you receive an error regarding xinetd or inetd you need to download the package listed above and install this to your Ubuntu server.
