This howto will guide you step by step howto setup a Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 4.0 with a SQL database instead of the MS Access database. Consider if you want to place the database on a existing or a new SQL server. You can create a new database on a excisting SQL server or simply choose to create a new SQL server to host the database. Set the SQL server to use also Windows Authentication if you use an excisting SQL server. We created for the SQL database a new user and named it CitrixSQL and this user needs db_owner permissions on the database, later on you can change these permissions to read/write only but if you change farmwide settings , implement servicepacks etc you need to level up the permissions again or you will get errors. (You can find this in the admin guide) After you agreed the license agreement etc you will get the question if you want to join an excisting farm or create a new farm, we have chosen to create a new farm. You can give the farm a new name, choose the database and the Default zone name would be default the ip range (192.168.0 for example)
If you pres next to continue you get the next picture The name will be default MF20.dsn and cannot be changed. You can fill in the Description and choose the SQL server to connect to. Pres next to continue
You can choose if you want to use windows authentication or SQL server authentication. We have choosen to use Windows Authentication. Also you see that the name used LoginID is wiped :)
You now can choose the default database to use. Default it will connect to the Master database but as we made an own database we choose that database. This information is ofcourse not available in the picture. Leave the "Use ANSI quoted identifiers" and "Use ANSI nulls paddings and warnings" marked otherwise you can get error 26013 which will point to a few solutions among that you have to mark above names ANSI configuration options.
The next screen you get we left default. You can configure it but we didn't. Default it saves logs etc to the currently loged on user's documents. You can change that.
Now you get the summary of the odbc connection. When you press Test data source you will get the next screen reporting if it is successfull or not.
Now you have to give up the name of the user that will access the datastore. We used the CitrixSQL user for this. Mind that you fill in the username with domainname\username otherwise you will get error 26013 again although the odbc test was succesfully.
Now you can choose a user that get's administrator privileges on the citrix farm. This user can later assign permissions like full admin, read only etc to other users.
After you assigned a user that get's administrative credentials you have to choose the host name that hosts the license server. You can also choose to do this later and enter it in the farm properties in the presentation server console (CMC). Without a valid license server the metafram server won't start correctly!
Now you can configure shadowing. If you choose here to prohibit shadowing the only way to enable it is a reinstall. No other solution is possible.(this is buildin by design)
You can configure the XML service port now. Default it shares the port 80 tcp with IIS. If you want another setup you have to choose "Use a separate port" and enter the correct port number.
Now you can add users to the remote desktop group. I always choose not to do this because I strip the remote desktop group from the ICA/Tcp connector and add another group like ICA_RDP group on the connector and add the users to this group. I save the Remote desktop users group for administrators who maintain the citrix servers.
Now a summery will come and give you still the change to go back and change settings. After you press Finish the installation will begin.
That was all there is to it. If you run into problems you can search the internet but you can also search the knowledge base of citrix or the forum of Brain Madden off course you can also register on our forum and fire up questions there :)
