VMware Server 2 is out and it is still free. VMware have done away with the old admin tool which you used to use to manage VMware server and have integrated this into a nice web interface. You can connect your VMware server to a CIFS datastore or host your files locally. There are also options to manage permissions similar to that in ESX Server. All in all a nice product.
