A few day's ago I got tipped by Michel Buis a freelancer in SBC world to take a look at the manufacturor of ultra thin clients called Jackpc's from ChipPC. I personally never heard of this goodie but heck we can't keep up with everything that comes out and is used in SBC these days or already used a long time in SBC land.
Thin clients normally are little tiny pc's standing on your desk (Figure 2) or under the desk with a construction. ChipPC however aprouches it from a different angel and made a complete thinclient that fits in a lanjack. Where you normally only get your tcp/ip connection from they implemented a complete working tiny PC that get's it's power over ethernet. As you can see in Figure 1 , it's a really small goodie that hosts all that you need to work in a terminal server with or without citrix presentation server installed on top of it.

The pro's of a JackPC is that you can build it in were ever you already implemented the lanjackets. Simply by replacing the 2 or 4 nic's that normally are fit into it by this goodie. Or you can build it into a desk, wall etc. See figure 3 for example places ChipPC used to buildin the JackPC. Figure 3
Try to walk away with this piece of hardware to steal it :) we whish you good luck. Although I have seen strange actions to get hands on hardware..... As you can see in figure 3 it's not a space consumer like a bigger thinclient but has of course also downsites. A cd/dvd player won't fit into it but if the company you work for is high on security this would be a good article to aquire. I have read a ppt presentation about there product and got a pdf sheet full of techspecs that looks nice but I won't bother you with it. If your interested in specs, presentations or demo's browse to www.ChipPC.com and contact them. We did it ourselves and are awaiting an answer if we maybe get our hands on a demo type of JackPC to write a review about it. |
