Microsoft released after almost 9 months of testing Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 (R2). Many company's are still testing the rollout of Service Pack 1 and now SP2 is out :)

The Service Pack is automaticly aproved in SUS / WSUS so be carefull if you use this product and need to test SP2 first before rolling it out in production.

What is new in SP2

I only loaded it onto a server @home so no production expirience. I heard from Leon that they changed the way RIS behaves but didn't play with that either.

Yeah, they have changed RIS. I was discussing this with some colleagues a few weeks back about how good RIS was when it came out. Yes it was buggy but it did a great job and since then Microsoft have not really done anything with it.

We are currently looking at upgrading our RIS Servers at our remote sites to SP2 so if you get a chance to test it let me know.

Cheers

As far as I understood Leon wil write an article about the changes in RIS but not sure how he is in his spare time.

It's just BDD what gets installed.
On an existing RIS server it runs in backwards compatibility mode so it still works like before. However, after installation of SP2 you would have the full power of BDD. And it's great! No more fiddling in answer files, just tell BDD what you want and how you want it in a GUI.

Haven't got the time for a review though..

As far as I understood from Leon he will write an article about RIS so I will mail him what he is doing besides putting water on flames (his new hobby lol being a fireman.)

Hello Hans,

would this SP2 also solve our delay problem regarding the redirected COMports? Do you have TerminalServer running so I can test our problem on your HardWare to isolate any release incompatabilyties.

Regards,

Jelle.

I did some research on the auto update through update services, and i read (somewhere) an MS official said that u need to approve the EULA agreement to have it roll out the update before autoupdate will install it.. so this is good news for the most of us. Stricter security is a nice thing to have, but to apply has had a lot of interuptions in our SBC environments..
