Windows Vista: Officially released today Print E-mail

Microsoft will be officially releasing Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 today. At 1:45pm PST Bill Gates will be in Times Square in New York to release the new operating system and office applications.

I know there are a lot of people who as yet have not had an opportunity to test this new operating system from Microsoft. I on the other hand have been running this for the last few weeks and have tested this from a Citrix user and Administrator point of view and the issues I experienced follow.

From the user perspective there is no Vista client as such however Citrix and Microsoft are working together to provide the best possible user experience for Windows Vista. They go on to recommend using ICA Client 9.230.

The client installed without any problems at all and initially all seemed to be working without a problem. I was able to connect to my published application however noticed that pass through authentication wasnt working properly. I then looked a little deeper into the problem and noticed that this was listed in Citrix Support article CTX112067 as a known issue with Windows Vista.

Another problem which I noticed was Web client did not function under Windows Vista. I think this is to do with an Internet Explorer 7 issue and didn't look too deeply into this one because I was running the Release candidate of the operating system and hopefully following todays release of the final product this will be resolved.

All in all Windows Vista looks to be an excellent operating system so much so that I ordered a copy this morning.

I think due to hardware considerations many company's who invested the last 2 years in new hardware will wait until they buy new hardware and right away a license for Vista and/or Office2007. I am not planning on running Vista yet. Reason I also am saving up money for new hardware and I will get a oem license then right away for Vista. I wonder how long Microsoft will hold on to there upgrade politics that you have to install WindowsXP first compleet instead of simply turning in a cd for authentication. Now you have to have a valid aproved fully installed XP client and then you can upgrade it to the apropiate Vista client.

I've got Vista premium at home now. I must admit it looks smooth again but I pushed a 1GB ram module extra inside and run now at 2GB. Don't think my gforece7300SE (read extreme light edition) is sufficient enough for vista but heck it was a cheap computer to aquire. I am getting used to all those vista goodies and like it a lot.
