The virtual battle is begon between Vmware/Citrix and Microsoft. According to an article on info world the next version of Vmware ESX is going to be free of charge. It contains the hart of ESX, namely the hypervisor and a set of drivers to run it.
However, it is fully functional and you can use all the features of his predecessor. When it comes to High Available solutions and Vmotion you would still have to have Virtual Center but it saves 450$ per server. At the same time Vmware launched an addin for powershell to operate Esx and Virtual center.
