This review is about ADM Template editor from www.sysprosoft.com. We always had to edit our policy templates (adm files) with notepad.exe or freeware utilities. But in notepad you can easely make typo's and most freeware utils cannot handle "if, end" etc statements. After troubleshooting some templates we found through www.gpoguy.com the policy editor which actuall can do all you need in a policyeditor utility. We will not go totally in depth about what this tool can do but will give you a impression what you can achive with a view simple mouseclicks and some keyboard strokes. With the adm template editor you can create new adm files or open excisting files to add or edit policies. It has a good GUI with a wizzard for beginners to create a policy. After you downloaded your trail edition you can start with opening the editor. Picture 1 Adding a new adm file is simple as you can see in picture 2. picture 2
Creating a category is also simple. Just click on Child. If you created a child you can then also choose Before or After. picture 3
Give the Category a name. picture 4
Give it a explain text and then browse the registry. normally you would add the key in notepad aka HKML\Software\etc.. now it's simly click and select see picture 6 picture 5
And all the goodies you can choose from. picture 6
Now right click in the right pane under Policy and choose "Create Policy". Normally you would type Policy !!... here in the notepad. picture 7
And you now can edit the policy. No more making comboboxes by hand or dropdownboxes. It's all in a simple GUI now. picture 8
You can now simply add registry keys and give it functions like Numeric etc. picture 9
You can choose from various registry key's to create your own policy or simply add a new registry key value. picture 10 picture 11 The Explain text simply type it and use enters all is in a wysiwig format.
Overall conclusion. I have seen various policy editors and gave them a try, but this one although it's not freeware is the most powerfull yet I have discovered. You need to play around a bit with this editor before you understand how it works but that is with all new software packages you aquire. For the 100$ we payed to get a fully working license it is worth it. Simply count the hours you spend in notepad and compare that with the few minutes you would play with this tool to make a new or edit an excisting policy. More resources: If you want to know more about policys we advice to buy the books or browse to www.gpoguy.com and get a member of the mailing list. I learned a lot that way, also you can find ton's of information about policies and how they work on the internet. |
