EPA Factories Access Stick Print E-mail

Ask any Citrix Engineer and they will tell you, one of the biggest headaches with implementing a solution for working from home at the moment is Internet Explorers security with regards to loading ActiveX controls, Citrix clients, etc!

Well EPA Factory have resolved these issues in creating the Access Stick.

The Access Stick is a USB stick built for Citrix Access. The device includes an integrated finger print scanner, Citrix client, end point analysis client and all the ActiveX controls required to launch a web browser pointed at your CAG logon point and allow you to log on.

Installation is really simple. The first time you insert the stick you are prompted to configure it. A small configuration application asks you to select the finger you wish to use, then scan your finger. You then enter your CAG URL and credentials and save your configuration. Thats it.

The beauty of this stick is that no footprint is left on the Client pc other than the fact that a USB stick was inserted. All cookies, etc are stored on the stick. In the event that someone steals the stick by taking it out of the PC or laptop you know whatever data is on there is safe as the device requires the fingerprint of the configured user in order to gain access to the stick. In terms of the stick being returned to IT for re-allocation, I'm not 100% sure how you would reconfigure the device but I am pretty sure that they have built something in for this.

Word from the folks over at EPA Factory is that you are able to install an RSA software token on the stick, you are also able to upgrade the ICA Client version on the stick to match your companies needs and that they are working on some form of management tool to automate all of this. There is also talks of somehow linking the fingerprint scan into Active Directory or another Database to make it a true 3rd factor authentication method.

Currently these sticks retail for around £100 and you can get special prices when you order 500 or more.

I do think these sticks are great BUT the price is pretty steep. The technology included is pretty great. No need to install OCX's, etc and I am sure a lot of work has gone into this but to pay that money on top of £300 odd for a Platinum Citrix CAL, Terminal Services CAL, etc it starts becoming a pretty costly exercise.

If security is a need at a company they will pay what ever it costs to secure connect without installing software on client pc's or even worse homeuser computers which are often hacked or invected with spybots, virusses etc. This is also why many citrixfarms do not allow drive connections made from client to server(s)

I suppose this is so, also companies are able to claim VAT back and like you say, can you put a price on security?
