Ever wondered what objects a user has in Active Directory. When you start to write a vbs script and want to change for example the attribute DisplayName to Givenname, Surname you have to figure out what nameconvention you need to use in order to achive that. One way of finding out is adsi editor, this application that comes with the windows support tools lists all ldap objects of a user (and ofcourse way more the entire active directory is listed). But there are alternatives that can also browse beyond your own domain by simply making a connection to it. One of these tools is java driven ldap browser from http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov the url to download the application is http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/~gawor/ldap/download.html This application comes as a zip file and after unzipping you need to change the lnk file that is included to the right directory were you unzipped the application. After you succesfully configured the application you get figure 1 Figure 1
If you now choose to connect you get the following screen (figure 2). Here you can create new connections to multiple domains or other environments that talk the ldap protocol. Figure 2
I was pretty suprised how fast this goodie launches although it's a java applet which isn't my favorit. You can at Host fill in the full domain name (e.g domain.local) and then press the Fetch DNs button. Now you can choose to connect anonymous which ofcourse will mostly get you an error if configured the right way. If you do not get an error while connection to your active directory environment well it's time to shout "Houston we got a problem". Figure 3
This ldap tool I simply found with a search query through one of the internet search providers like yahoo, google , msn etc, is one of the many ldap browsers you can find on the internet. I also found one which persist on a executable but that loads not this fast. Well that is all for this review actually, the program loads up fast and shows almost everything..but not all it still contains some work.. I would appriciate to see a sid of a user instead of squares. I will scope out later some other ldap browsers and write sometime a new review about these little handy tools that a engineer really needs to get a program or script working.
