2007 was a particularly interesting year in the IT industry. We saw dual and quad core CPU's becoming affordable for end users, we saw the mainstream release of Windows Vista, we saw the release candidate of Windows Server 2008, we saw a new version of Office, we saw a new version of Mac OSx, a new light weight version of VMware ESX server, Virtualization being integrated into Windows and hosts of other great things. I thought I would take a few minutes to tell you about what I consider to be my favorite piece of software of 2007. Without a doubt this has to be a product by a company called Logmein (www.logmein.com). The particular software I am referring to is Logmein Rescue. In a nutshell the software is a remote control application similar to dameware, vnc and several other remote control applications. The nice thing about this application is that I simply log on to the technician console, generate a code, send the user to a website, give them the code and wham, I am either a remote view or a remote control session depending on what I need. Earlier this year I was involved in the roll out of a couple of Citrix access gateways to replace our secure gateways for our home users. Now as I am sure you know from your support experience telling a user how to do something over the phone, even if you have a document with screenshots, is not a very simple task. The number of different operating systems, etc which are currently on the marker make this task very complex. With Logmein Rescue I simply log on to the technician console. A very small, light activex control is installed on the technician machine. From here the technician clicks on new session and types a description. A unique 6 digit pin code is generated with further instructions on connecting to the user. With this code generated you simply instruct the user to browse to www.logmein123.com input the 6 digit pin code and they are automatically connected to the technicians console. During this process a file approximately 800kb in size is downloaded and run on the users machine. This is what allows the remote control session to take place. The technician then clicks whether he/she would like a remote view or remote control session. The end user is then prompted to accept or deny the request and depending on their answer the connection is established or denied. Obviously this is not the only remote control software on the market but for me personally it has saved hours upon hours of my time doing roll out support, I can merely forward calls to the helpdesk and they deal with it whilst I get on with my next task! To check out this and other logmein products go to their website www.logmein.com and chose the product you would like from their homepage. Most products have a 30 day trial period and some (standard logmein and hamachi) are free. Without a doubt this is my software of 2007! Thanks need to go to Clinton for making me aware of this cool software!
