Recently there was a news bulletin about thinstall becoming a partner of Citrix. The news was you don't need a citrix ica client software to be present anymore and can simply drop a configured thinica.exe on a USB stick and launch it from any PC that can handle USB sticks. Curious as we were we downloaded the first thinica file and played around with it. Soon we started asking questions and hooked up with Douglas Brown who also wrote a article about it on http://www.dabcc.com. We talked about what options would make this product mature as we weren't happy with it as it was. Soon Thinstall released a new version and now were looking at the newest version. First step would be to register at www.thinstall.com browse to the usb applications and download the thinica.exe (http://www.thinstall.com/products/VirtualizedCitrixICAClient.php scroll down and hit download). You have to fill in a valid e-mail address cause they will send a download url to that address!. Next step is simply hitting the thinica.exe and you get the following screen to see. The default startpage is to citrix but you can alter the homepage to your Web Interface (WI) or to your Citrix Secure Gateway (CSG)
If you configured a webinterface it will simply launch the connection to the webinterface. Next step would be to logon to the webinterface and launch your published application or desktop. The thinica.exe will make sure it launches correct. Start with Program Neighborhood (PN.exe). This will launch the Program Neighborhood environment and it will try to autodetect the citrixenvironment. You need to supply a username , password and the domainname. Now you can save the password but don't look suprised if you cannot find the encrypted password back like you used to be in a custom made ica connection file. We are very pleased with this invention, you don't need a workstation with a citrix ica client installed on it but simply launch it from your preconfigured USB stick. It works like a charm. However it cannot launch applications automaticly like preconfigured wfica32.exe can launch a ica file, we have asked thinstall about this and maybe they will provide this for the future? who knows. Overall conclusion. This is a valuable add-on if you want to show for example at a customer a connection to a citrixfarm without having to install the citrix ica client software if it's not on a workstation.
