A while ago I was asked to do a inventory of a new customer. The tool I got handed out was called Total Network Inventory. Personally I never heard of it. there are so many inventory tools that you won't know em all.
When the program stars up you get the wizzard screen you can pick from what you want to do. When you run the scan wizard you can choose from a few options. One option is the network places overview. Here you can choose the domain you want to scan and fill in a domain username and password in to access computers remotely.
The network places overview gives us the following picture.
As you can see you can also logon as current user, test the logon and remember the settings. We scanned our virtual servers with the tool and got a good output. In the field I also had to scan thin clients but the tool is like most inventory scantools depending on the wmi service to perform good. It also has a report wizard with out of the box reports which are very usefull in a report. If you can't scan a computer remotely they also made available a standalone executable which is created from the inventory tool itself and can be saved on a location you specify. The xml file then generated can be read into the inventory tool and you can generate reports with it. The overall scan speed depends ofcourse on the machines your scanning and the network et cetera. You just have to be patient while the results roll in. It is also useful to document the environment your managing. This tool has my thumb up. For more information visit there website
